Finding the Pulse of The Bokkom: A West Coast Adventure

Journey with Lauren and Gareth: Uncover the Beat of the salty Bokkom on West Coast Way
Tucked away in the charming West Coast town of Velddrif, just under two hours from Cape Town, lies a hidden gem that captures the essence of coastal heritage and natural beauty, Bokkomlaan.
Bokkoms
Bokkomlaan is full of history, with many vis-huise (fish houses) still standing along the riverside, some of them restored into restaurants and shops. It’s here where you can see the age-old West Coast tradition of making bokkoms, whole mullet fish salted and hung in bundles to dry in the sun and wind. As you walk along the gravel road, you’ll pass workers hanging fish on wooden racks, the salty scent carried by the breeze, and some people selling traditional bokkoms to thin bokkom strips ready for you to eat as you continue to explore Bokkomlaan.
Columbine Co.
A morning on Bokkomlaan wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Columbine Co., a bustling riverside café known for its hand-roasted coffee and fresh-baked treats. Whether you’re grabbing a takeaway cup to sip as you explore or settling in at a table to enjoy the river views, it’s the perfect way to start your day. Boats drift by, birdlife flutters along the water’s edge, and the scent of coffee mingles with the morning air, it’s a moment of pure West Coast calm.

The Beauty of Bokkomlaan
Beyond the food, history, and boat rides, the true magic of Bokkomlaan lies in its natural beauty. Flowers grow along the gravel road, geese waddle freely through the area, and shoals of fish swimming through the shallow water of the river. As you walk along the Bokkomlaan, the view of the jetties stretching into the water and the quiet rhythm of life along the Berg River offer a kind of peace that’s increasingly hard to find in this day and age. It’s a place where time slows down.
So when you’re planning your next West Coast Way road trip, be sure to include Velddrif and Bokkomlaan on your itinerary, it’s a detour worth taking.
