Base camp will be in luxury tented accommodation at the private nature reserve of Zevenputs outside of Lambert’s Bay. Spend your days on our guided hiking tour which follows the Crayfish Trail itinerary while overnighting at the exclusive remote locations base camp.

Summary:

Day of arrival: No hike day
Guests may spend the afternoon at their leisure. Take some time to settle into your luxury tent and explore your surroundings.

Hiking and Activity Day 1: Total: 15 km
Guests are collected and transported to the beginning of their hiking day. Your local guide will accompany you to the famous Vensterklip after which the farm was named. The morning’s walk certainly shows us why with sandstone koppies (small rocky outcrops) and magnificent views of Verlorenvlei. We follow an out and back path of 10 km.
Guests are then transported to Baboon Point, a Provincial Heritage Site. Once at the cave site we will learn about the nomadic people of the Khoi and San. Guests then follow a scenic and manageable 5 km walk back to Elands Bay for lunch.

Hiking Day 2: 18 km
Guests will be transported to Elands Bay to meet your local guide and begin the days walking. This is the longest stretch on the Crayfish Trail with sand under foot, ocean to the left and Strandveld to the right. Enjoy an afternoon tractor ride with local farmer, Herman Burger who treats guests to a guided tractor ride to explore the Steenbokfontein farm and caves.

Hiking Day 3: 12 km
Guests are transported to Lambert’s Bay where they meet their local guide. We enjoy a morning walk to Bird Island where we explore the auditorium, bird hide and learn more about the endangered Cape Gannet.
We have the opportunity to hear from a local West Coast Fisherman who tells us a little bit about his life and the Abalobi initiative which is using technology to empower small-scale fishers.

Hiking Day 4: Papendorp to Doring Bay 16 km:
We follow a scenic path from Doring Bay where we hear about the local fishing community and nearby mining industry. The mouth of the Olifants River is breath-taking, one cannot help but imagine David Attenborough narrating in the background. From there we make our way along the beach toward the quaint beach holiday town of Strandfontein and then along to Doring Bay. We finish our walk with lunch at arguably one of South Africa’s most scenic restaurants, The Jetty Restaurant where our guests are treated to a tasting of the Fryers Cove suite of wines.

Our trails are all-inclusive*. We provide all meals, accommodation, local guide, transport and daily activities.
