On Saturday the 4 March, over one thousand people came together in celebration of the new Mouton Foundation Centre and Sports Field. The Mouton Foundation is the community development arm of Mouton Citrus – an important producer and business partner for Carmien Tea. The Mouton Foundation is funded through the sale of citrus and rooibos tea through the Fairtrade Certification Scheme and other retailer Foundations.
The new Mouton Foundation Centre and Sports Field
The De Meul Community Centre is the last and largest of the four centres that the Mouton Foundation has established across the Citrusdal valley. The main focus being to provide educational and health support services to all our workers. At the De Meul Centre, over 110 school children get bussed in and out every day to attend an Afterschool Club and receive a good meal while their parents are still working. The facility also houses a small base-clinic and office for our mobile nurse practitioner. The centre and adjacent sports field is used for many community activities including weddings, funerals and culture evenings to name a few. During winter, the sports field and locker rooms are used on a weekly basis by our local rugby club and on Sundays by over 500 seasonal workers play soccer during the citrus harvesting season.
The opening of the De Meul Community Centre also coincided with the 10 year celebration of the Mouton Foundation. Although development activities have long been a part of our business ethos and operational culture, it was in 2007 that a separate legal entity with a governing body consisting mainly of workers was created. The focus of the Mouton Foundation is on education, health, community facilities, youth development and other community development activities.
