What Travelling Women Want

Cape West Coast Road Trip Perfectly Positioned To Meet A Rising Travel Trend

The future of travel is female.

This is according to multiple surveys and growing statistics, which show that women travel more than men. 80% of all travel decisions are made by women, and 64% of global travellers are female.  All signs indicate that women now drive the world travel economy.

So, what do women want when travelling?

“We have seen that female travellers are looking for immersive getaways. They want to experience diverse cultures, cuisines, and customs. They prioritise happiness and are looking for beach escapes, unique shopping opportunities, sightseeing experiences, and adventures that leave them with rich memories,” says Carmen Lerm, founder of West Coast Way.

“The “girlfriend getaway market” is a big one, with women often travelling together with friends and family, and in the past few years, the number of women-only travel companies has grown by well over 200% due to the fact that nearly two out of three travellers today are women. And women are also travelling solo and with their partners and children for family getaways.”

Summer On The West Coast

It’s easy to see how West Coast Way ticks all the boxes for female travellers. The Cape West Coast and its surroundings deliver on all the points women are looking for – whether alone, in groups or with their families. The region is known for its friendly locals and vibrant culture, and there are a plethora of activities, events, eateries and attractions to explore, as well as stunningly beautiful natural scenery.

And, whilst it is truly an all-year-round destination, summer spent on the Cape West Coast is a spectacular time, and the tourism sector is gearing up for a bumper season this year – with female travellers being an expected part of the influx of tourists.

Five Weskus-Themed Routes

The West Coast Way offers a unique and adventurous way to explore the West Coast of South Africa. This exciting journey features five interlocking routes that weave together like a delicious Weskus koeksister. From the Culture and Foodie Routes to the Tractor, Berg, and Wild Routes, there’s something for everyone on this epic journey. The best part is that road-trippers can start anywhere and explore at their own pace, taking in all the stunning scenery and amazing experiences the West Coast has to offer.

Culture Route

The West Coast is a unique and vibrant destination that boasts a friendly culture and a deep love for nature. From the stunning shores of Bloubergstrand to the majestic landscapes of the Cederberg Mountains, there’s no shortage of incredible sights to see and experience in this magnificent region.

The perfect first stop for road-trippers heading from Cape Town to the West Coast is Studio 46. This fine art, jewellery, and handcraft studio is located in Bloubergstrand on the historic Stadler Road and has a range of stunning pieces for customers to enjoy and take home. The Lodge At Atlantic Beach offers luxurious yet affordable accommodation in Melkbosstrand, just 25 minutes outside Cape Town. The lodge boasts an 18-hole links-style golf course, ideal for golf enthusiasts who want to enjoy a challenging round of golf while taking in views of Table Mountain.

Groote Post is not just a destination to taste some of the best wines in the West Coast; it is also the gateway to the charming town of Darling, where visitors can indulge in the local culture and history. Darling Brew, with its top-notch brewery and mouth-watering restaurant, is the true ‘tasting room’ for those who appreciate good beer and food. For those looking to stay in Darling, Disa Lodge offers a cosy and comfortable place to rest and rejuvenate after a day of exploring. Other fantastic attractions to add to the road trip itinerary include West Coast National Park, !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre, Evita se Perron, and various nature experiences and restaurants that are dotted throughout the area.

Foodie Route

Food is the best way to experience a culture, and the West Coast of South Africa is no exception. Known for its unique flavours and delicious cuisine, this region will leave visitors’ taste buds craving more. Thali Thali Game Lodge is one of the best places to experience this culinary journey. With comfortable accommodations, exciting game drives, and a restaurant that serves up a big deal of mouth-watering meals, guests will never go hungry.

When guests are ready to venture out, Thali Thali Game Lodge is the perfect launch pad to explore all the small towns of the West Coast. Take a circular route to Langebaan, Paternoster, St Helena Bay, Saldanha, and Jacobsbaai, and discover the true essence of the region’s culture through its food.

Tractor Route

Much like the wheels on the tractor, this route takes road-trippers round and round the West Coast on a journey through stunning landscapes and charming towns. From the blue ocean to the golden-yellow wheat fields, you’ll pass through purple olive groves and green vineyards. But the fun doesn’t stop there! Explore the small towns of Yzerfontein, Darling, Riebeek Valley, Malmesbury, Moorreesburg, and Koringberg, where road-trippers can get a taste of the local cuisine, meet friendly locals, and snap some unforgettable photos.

Berg Route

Discover the Berg River, which flows through Bokkomlaan, a heritage site that is rich in biodiversity. The area is also the heritage heart of Velddrif, with historical fishing cottages converted into quirky restaurants, stores and cafes for visitors to enjoy. Indulge in a delicious meal from Ek en Djy Vissery, known for its full-flavoured dishes made with the freshest ingredients. Take a cruise along the Berg River with Cracklin’ Rosie River Tours, and after, pop in at Columbine Co. for a cup of freshly roasted coffee.

Situated just outside Velddrif and Dwarskersbos lies Wamakersvlei Beach Farm, a private beach offering five individual self-catering cottages for guest stays. It’s the perfect place for families to unwind and enjoy the West Coast’s natural beauty together this summer.

Wild Route

The West Coast Way Wild Route is divided into two halves, each with its own unique offerings that come together to create an unforgettable experience. The ‘Sustainable Seafood Track’ showcases the West Coast’s commitment to sustainability, and the ‘People Rocking Nature’ portion celebrates the locals who make this region so special. When it’s time to rest, check out Lamberts Bay Tourism for seaside accommodations or West Coast Wonders for farm and town stays in Lambert’s Bay. On this route, road-trippers can also come across stunning venues like Bosduifklip for weddings and the delicious Sauvignon Blanc from Kookfontein. For those looking to explore the “valley of flowers”, Citrusdal’s Piekenierskloof Mountain Lodge offers exceptional accommodation.
