Protect the West Coast Champions Of Environmental Preservation

Rallying for Nature: How Protect the West Coast Champions Environmental Preservation

Nestled along the vibrant shores of South Africa, the West Coast is a mesmerising expanse of natural wonder, teeming with life and unparalleled beauty. Yet, beneath this picture-perfect landscape lies a looming threat—illegal and destructive mining activities that jeopardise its delicate ecosystems and cultural heritage. Thanks to Protect The West Coast (PTWC), we see a stand being taken. Established in 2020, this not-for-profit organisation is made up of a diverse group of passionate South Africans—including scientists, journalists, activists, and legal experts—who are dedicated to safeguarding the region’s precious natural resources.

The mission

PTWC is on a mission to halt unlawful and destructive mining activities through various avenues:

1. Wield legal power in the courts

Using the law as a tool, PTWC aims to challenge and prevent harmful mining practices through legal means.

2. Gain media coverage and create awareness

By raising awareness and garnering media attention, PTWC seeks to shine a spotlight on the environmental impact of mining activities.

3. Develop and support community action partners

Collaborating with local communities, PTWC works to empower and mobilise action against detrimental mining practices.

A thriving future for the West Coast

PTWC envisions a future where the West Coast flourishes, benefiting both present and future generations.

Their vision includes:

  1. Protecting the coastline from unlawful and destructive mining
  2. Promoting and celebrating the region’s economic, environmental, and cultural abundance
  3. Encouraging a deep personal connection to the area’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage

This remarkable initiative has already seen glimmers of hope, with several court rulings in favour of their vision. Now, it’s your turn to join this noble cause and add to the global pressure for responsible resource management.

From the Orange River to Cape Columbine, hundreds of kilometres of South Africa’s West Coast are at risk due to industrial-scale mining. This poses a grave threat to local communities, fisheries, and the natural environment for generations to come. The area is an ecological treasure trove, home to thousands of unique plant species and a haven for a diverse array of marine life.
