Cape Camino has launched a further eight days to the local Wet Coast Way Camino Pilgrimage route. This will bring the total number of days on Camino in South Africa to thirty two.
A Camino is a Pilgrimage. A spiritual experience. To be used at your leisure, in your way, for your purposes. To reflect, explore, reunite. To create meaning in your own life for your own purposes.
CAMINO DE SANTIAGO – OUR INSPIRATION
Cape Camino is inspired by Europe’s Camino de Santiago originating in Spain. Spanish citizens are expected to walk their local Camino as a form of nation building. It is an obligation, in order to get into universities and attain jobs in the workplace.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of Spaniards walk their local Camino. Building the nation, building tenacity, bonding families and developing internal strength and maturity.
Cape Camino offers this opportunity to South Africans and international visitors
Now you, too, can walk South Africa’s Camino: Cape Camino.
The Cape Camino is a showcase of our magnificent diversity. No two days are alike. The route is owned and hosted by the community: farmstays, homestays, Church communities, villages, small towns. All offering the Cape’s unprecedented hospitality.
The Cape Camino has 4 sections:
- Filled with wine, farms, and deep valleys: Wellington to Tulbagh
- Farm & Community: Tulbagh to Aurora
- Sand ‘n Strand: Aurora to Velddrif via Redelinghuys and Elands Bay. This is the Sandveld, Strandveld and West Coast section of the Camino. Spend the nights at Klein Tafelberg, Redelinghuys, Klarefontein, Elands Bay, Fork West, Dwarskersbos and Velddrif.
- And the Peninsula – following the Cape Town Big 6 attractions
Each section is approximately 8 days long.
The terrain is tough, the distances are long but the hosts meet you with wide open arms, comfort and safety. The rural areas provide travellers with very low Covid exposure. You walk in the open air, you walk to and between rural communities. There are no cars, trains or planes. Your hosts have not been travelling and have been away from crowds.
Your contribution will bring sustainability to small rural communities, particularly in the hospitality and tourism sectors. Each logistic that is needed by the Pilgrim offers a job to thousands of individuals on the route.
