Heritage Festival 2019
This year the San living and training at !Khwa ttu invite you to join them for a Heritage Festival.
All South Africans love flame-cooked food and, of course, there will be a delicious selection of braai cuisine on offer, a bar and a food bazaar for those wishing to purchase refreshments.
There’ll also be activities for the whole family to enjoy, from herbal tea tastings, San storytelling, and tracking, to traditional dancing, singing and tractor rides – for this weekend only all activities are free of charge.
Included in your ticket: entrance to the new San Heritage Centre
At last, the San can share their heritage as they wish, when they wish and where they wish. The Heritage Centre will feature interactive, audio-visual as well as static displays and presentations that depict the lives of the San. It will incorporate several of the old farm buildings as well as an innovative, new architect-designed building that follows the natural contours of the land, with a curved, planted roof. In keeping with the San way of life, the center uses sustainable measures for lighting, heating, and cooling.
“The !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre is a great deal more than a collection of artifacts and historical photos. It’s a pioneering initiative that embraces the principle of community curation, led by San consultants from across Southern Africa and academics. The exhibitions, San-led trails, and guided experiences are designed to engage the body and senses as much as the mind,” explains Michael Daiber, General Manager of !Khwa ttu. “They demonstrate the skills and knowledge of the San people, while also telling the archaeological story of the origins of the modern mind on the Southern African coastline.”
