Not far from the city bowl of Cape Town and on the southern side of Table Mountain lies the fertile Constantia Valley – this is where you’ll find the iconic Groot Constantia.
Groot Constantia is well known for both their red and white wines and one can taste the range by visiting one of three tasting venues on the estate. A standard tasting takes you through five wines of choice, or better yet try the Chocolate and Wine pairing – a real treat for the senses!
The flagship, Gouverneurs Reserve red, and the Gouverneurs Reserve white are both elegantly produced blends. Varietals such as Shiraz, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc will not disappoint either.
The famed Grand Constance, a natural sweet, has been the wine of choice for royalty over the centuries. It regularly walks off with top industry awards, and without making a significant dent in your pocket you can walk away with a bottle of this golden liquid to share with friends after a meal.
Apart from the wine you will also find an art exhibition, Art @ Constantia, at the wine sales tasting hall, and two museum spaces at the Cloete Cellar as well as the Manor House – both part of the Iziko museums of South Africa. There is rich history here so take your time to walk slowly through these spaces. The Cape Dutch architecture of the Manor House in itself is impressive, but the beauty of The Lady of Abundance sculpture is the wine estates central focal point. It doesn’t end there for architecture and art lovers as the magnificence of the 1971 Cloete Cellar sculptured pediment will leave you speechless!
There are two excellent eateries, Jonkershuis Restaurant and Simon’s Restaurant & Deli, both serving a wide range of excellent foods. Whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner, or even just for a coffee these spots form a good part of any estate visit.
Take a stroll up the oak-lined avenues and through the vineyards to really soak up the atmosphere at the wine estate, and look out for hidden gems such as the historical bath which provide quiet spaces in a uniquely beautiful setting.
