Rooiels, Pringle Bay, Hanglip, Kleinmond and Betty’s Bay on the West Coast Way Cape Way Route

Travel along Clarence Drive and cross the low bridge that spans the Rooiels river where it’s dark waters snake along the edge of a lovely sheltered beach before flowing into the sea. The road continues up a sharp rise where a right turn will take you into the little village of Rooiels. Relish the peace and tranquillity of a tiny community that has accommodation, village shop, local pub and outstanding views of the bay. Explore the rocky outcrops and cliffs where waves crash and send spray high into the air. Search for the ancient cave and sea shell middens or do a bit of fishing off the rocks or from the slipway.

An 8 km drive from Rooiels along the R44 will take you to Pringle Bay, known for its long stretch of beach of the finest white sand, excellent bird watching, sunsets, fishing and water activities. This little village is leading the way in plastic-free living and is hosting a festival to raise awareness and provide educating on this important issue.

A small supermarket, post office, country shop, restaurants and accommodation meet all your needs in this unspoiled holiday settlement. Follow the Hangklip Road from the centre of the village towards the cliffs and a hotel, guesthouse, lighthouse and views that will captivate you. Keep a sharp eye out for the majestic Verreaux Eagles that nest here.

Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond are another short hop, skip and jump in the car from Pringle Bay. Betty’s, as she is known by the locals, is where you will find the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens with forested paths that meander deep into the kloof, past waterfalls, streams and the natural fynbos of the area. A tea room and nursery make this a great family attraction and a variety of hikes and trails can be accessed from the gardens. On the beachfront at Stony Point, you will be educated and enchanted by the breeding colony of African Penguins in the Stony Point Nature Reserve.

Surrounded by the Kleinmond Coastal and Mountain Reserve, Kleinmond attracts hikers and walkers, with easy coastal paths suitable for all ages. Harbour Road is the most popular place in town, and you will find an array of restaurants, gift shops and art galleries here. Continue to the very end of the road to the slipway and walk around the marked paths and cliffs for outstanding views. Get a dose of salty ocean magic at the Blue Flag beach or discover the fynbos, spot whales and explore on horseback with the equestrian centre in the town. Golfers will love the luxurious Arabella Golf course and the challenging 9 holes set in the kloof at the local Kleinmond Golf Club.
